Charts and Graphs are common forms of presenting information.  In this lesson, a class of  students of various ABE levels will be taught to design graphs and learn to solve word problems using graphs.

B. Instruction

1. Warm-up Talk briefly about where we see graphs and charts. The introduction on the following site is a good one. Have copies of the daily news that display examples of graphs and charts. The student page will direct students to this site-     Make a Graph

2. Student Activity Page

Direct pairs of students to create a graph. The student page will have suggestions regarding data to use. The students will then be directed to other Internet lessons which will address the standards on various levels.

3. Post Assessment (check for level of performance)
In the next session, direct the student groups to share the charts produced and the other  lessons learned, either orally or in writing.

 C. Branching Out Activities
ABE/ASE  Lesson on Graphs  In the following classes, bring in a graph or chart that you and/or  the students have found in a newspaper or magazine. Make up questions from this material. Do more lessons from the websites given.
