Tobacco use can cause harm. Cancer, emphysema, and heart disease may be caused by tobacco use. Second hand smoke may also cause health problems for people who live or work with smokers.


In the past, smoking was popular. People thought that smoking wasn't harmful.


Chewing tobacco was popular for baseball players. They thought that chewing tobacco wasn't harmful. Many people would not have started chewing if they had known of the effects.

There were ads for smoking on TV and on radio. People weren't worried that smoking was harmful. When people smoked, they thought that they looked glamorous. People were influenced by advertising.


Now, people realize that smoking is harmful. They want to quit tobacco use, but that isn't usually easy. Most smokers would quit if they could.


There are a variety of ways to stop tobacco use. Many people who were smokers are now free of tobacco's harmful effects. People have used nicotine gum, patches, or other ways to quit successfully.
