Learning Level: ABE 1

Content Standards Writing

Arizona Standards/Indicators:    Indicator B Applies the writing process to complete a variety of writing tasks.

#3 Writes a paragraph of approximately 75 words of own choosing, including a topic sentence followed by details to support the main idea.

Learning Context: Family member

Lesson Overview

This lesson will provide learners the opportunity to explore their own family/cultural history. They will interact with other students to become aquatinted with individuals of different cultural/ethnic backgrounds. The learner will also prepare a written record of their own choosing to present to the class.

  1. Instruction

1. Warm-up

Write the word "tradition" on the board. Explain what traditions are and give some basic examples. Share with the class your thoughts about the word "tradition" and write those on the board. Use examples that include holiday celebrations, songs, family rituals, heirlooms handed down from prior generations in your family.

2. Student Activity

Ask students to describe what they think and feel when they see or hear the word tradition. Ask them to site some traditions they have in their families. Write their responses on the board.

  1. Have the students investigate one or two websites about family traditions. Then instruct the students to write a paragraph using the student lesson page.
  1. Branching Out Activities
  1. Have the students read their paragraphs orally to the class. Initiate a classroom discussion on how family is central to traditions and how many traditions are not very different among the students. If possible, publish the paragraphs.
