ABEIII: Writing Indicator B—Applies conventions of grammar and usage rules to complete a variety of writing tasks.

Materials Needed

Whiteboard & markers

Parts of Speech handouts—enough for each student (Handout is merely a colored page with Noun, Pronoun, Verb, Adjective, Adverb, Preposition, Article, Conjunction, and Interjection)—see below

List of backup sentences to show additional samples of each part of speech

Activity

Briefly review each part of speech on the page. Explain to students why each of the highlighted words is the specific part of speech that is identified. Then either have pre-planned sentences or ask students to give you sentences to write on the board. Next have the students go through the sentence with the instructor to identify what words are that particular part of speech you are working on at the time. Do two or three sentences until the students  understand the concept. Then move on to the next part of speech. If the lesson seems difficult for the class, please feel free to finish the lesson during the next class period.
