Learning Context: Community Member

Lesson Overview: This lesson shows students various homes in the states of repair/disrepair. It links a number of Phoenix City Housing Codes to the pictures of the homes. The student practices grammar, language functions, writing, reading, and speaking skills at the four levels within the lesson and worksheet. Students have an opportunity to listen to the selections on each picture page. The objectives of the lessons are to familiarize students with typical United States customs concerning property upkeep, and to encourage discussions about the responsibilities of home ownership. other objectives include the mastery of vocabulary, grammar, idioms, and sentence formation in each of the worksheets.


Warm-up: (15 minutes) Ask the students to meet in groups of four and describe homes in the students' neighborhoods. (7 minutes). Ask one from each group to tell one good and one bad thing about the homes. Write some key vocabulary on the board. (include word responsible) Introduce the lesson: Phoenix, Arizona has codes for homeowners. If you own a home in Phoenix, you must follow these codes, or you may get a fine. If you rent a home, the owner is responsible for following these codes.(8 minutes)

Student Activity: 1-2 hours Direct the students to the internet lesson on each level. it may be helpful to pair students, so that they may practice the sentences and text. Tell the students to go to the worksheet when the lesson is finished. Help the students use the on-line dictionary if they need help.

Post Assessment: The answers can be left on the worksheet if the student downloads it, or you may download and copy the worksheet before class, and omit the answers. Correct the writing according to the AZ standards. Follow-up activities will be needed to reinforce and show mastery of the grammar and structures in the lesson.


Branching Out

At the next class session, ask the students to share their writings.

Publish the writings and share with other classes, or on the internet.

Ask a speaker from neighborhood services to come to class for questions and answers.

Ask students to attend a neighborhood meeting, and report back on the proceedings.
