Lesson Overview : This lesson introduces the students to the use of the internet as a health information resource. Students will gain an understanding of the dangers of tobacco use, and discuss ways to stop tobacco use, as well as how to educate family members. Other objectives include the mastery of vocabulary, grammar, and sentence formation in each of the worksheets.

Warm-up: (15 minutes) Ask the students to meet in groups of four and describe their experiences with using tobacco. (7 minutes). Ask one from each group to tell two reasons why people use tobacco Write some key vocabulary on the board. (include words tobacco, cancer, smoking, cigarette.)

Introduce the lesson: There are many places on the Internet where you can learn about health. Go to the lesson on your level, and learn about tobacco.

Student Activity: 1-2 hours Direct the students to the internet lesson on each level. It may be helpful to pair students in the first and second levels so that they may practice the sentences and text. Tell the students to go to the worksheet when the lesson is finished. Help the students use the on-line dictionary if they need help. During the next class, discuss the lesson with the class. Each group can plan and present the discussion questions to the whole group.

Post Assessment: The answers can be left on the worksheet if the student downloads it, or you may download and copy the worksheet before class, and omit the answers. Correct the writing according to the AZ standards. Follow-up activities will be needed to reinforce and show mastery of the grammar and structures in the lesson.

 Branching Out

At the next class session, ask the students to share their writings.

Publish the writings and share with other classes, or on the internet.

Ask a speaker from a local health provider to come to class for questions and answers.
